Caregiving is one of the fastest-growing and most essential fields in our region — and West ÌìÑÄÉçÇø College is creating a new pathway for those ready to step into it.

In partnership with Successful Aging Solutions & Community Consulting (SASCC), the College is introducing a new Community Caregiver Certificate, expected to launch in Fall 2026, designed to prepare individuals for entry-level caregiving roles while supporting families and communities across Santa Clara County.

With adults aged 55 and older projected to make up more than a quarter of the county’s population by 2030, the demand for skilled caregivers continues to rise. This program is built to meet that moment — whether you’re starting a new career, returning to the workforce, or already caring for a loved one.

A Flexible, Accessible Path into Healthcare

The Community Caregiver Certificate is a two-course, noncredit program designed to meet students where they are. With a low-barrier, accessible format, it opens the door for adult learners, career changers, reentry workers, family caregivers, and English language learners looking to build new skills and step into the healthcare field.

Students begin with an introduction to home health caregiving, gaining foundational knowledge in areas such as:

  • The role of a caregiver and career pathways in the field
  • Workplace safety, infection control, and basic caregiving principles
  • Communication skills for working with clients, families, and care teams
  • Ethical standards, cultural awareness, and professional responsibilitie
  • Understanding the needs of aging populations and individuals with disabilities

From there, students move into a hands-on skills lab where they apply what they’ve learned in real-world scenarios. Through guided practice and simulation, students build confidence in essential caregiving skills such as mobility support, personal care, communication, and safety — preparing them for fieldwork and entry into the workforce.

A Partnership with Purpose

The certificate is the first program developed through Senior Guided Pathways, an innovative collaboration between West ÌìÑÄÉçÇø College and SASCC focused on re-engaging adult learners age 50 and older while building workforce pathways aligned to real community needs.

By combining West ÌìÑÄÉçÇø College’s academic expertise with SASCC’s deep experience in aging services, the program delivers training that is both practical and directly connected to the community it serves.

Step Into a Career That Makes a Difference

Caregiving is more than a job — it’s an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in people’s lives. This certificate provides a starting point for those looking to enter a high-demand field while building skills that matter every day.
